Kauai, Between Red Canyons and Green Cliffs
Kauai
Kauai puts rain-dark mountains behind crescent beaches, with the fluted Na Pali cliffs and rust-red depths of Waimea Canyon supplying the drama. Come for salt-sprayed boat rides, slow lunches in Hanalei and coastal cycling beneath ironwood trees; leave enough unscheduled time for showers to pass and the mountains to reappear.
Highlights
- Na Pali Coast seen from the water
- Waimea Canyon and misty Kokee lookouts
- Hanalei Bay beneath waterfall-lined mountains
- Oceanfront cycling on Kapaa’s coastal path
- Poipu sunshine and South Shore gardens
What to Do
- See the Na Pali Coast by boat — Book a reputable operator for close views of folded cliffs and hanging valleys; routes and departures depend on sea conditions. (morning)
- Drive Waimea Canyon into Kokee — Start early for clearer canyon views, then continue into cooler forest; check road and trail conditions before adding a walk. (morning)
- Plan a Haena and Hanalei day — Explore Kee’s mountain-backed shoreline, then linger in Hanalei; nonresidents need advance Haena State Park entry and parking or shuttle reservations. (morning)
- Cycle Kapaa’s oceanfront path — Rent a bike for the paved Ke Ala Hele Makalae coastal path, with easy turnaround points and breezy views near Kealia. (morning)
- Spend a beach afternoon at Poipu — Choose a lifeguarded stretch and ask about conditions before swimming; give resting turtles and monk seals generous space. (afternoon)
- Tour Allerton Garden — A guided visit reveals sculpted garden rooms, tropical foliage and enormous fig roots in the sheltered Lawai Valley; reserve ahead. (morning)
- Play an ocean-view round at Princeville Makai — The North Shore course pairs coastal holes with mountain views; book a tee time and allow for passing showers. (morning)
Where to Eat
- Hamura Saimin — Special saimin, followed by lilikoi chiffon pie if available (Lihue)
- Pono Market — A poke bowl or the day’s Hawaiian plate-lunch offerings (Kapaa)
- Bar Acuda — Local North Shore honeycomb with goat cheese, plus seasonal small plates (Hanalei)
- Eating House 1849 — The current locally caught fish preparation (Poipu)
Where to Stay
Choose Poipu for generally sunnier beach weather, established resorts and easier access to the South Shore and Waimea Canyon. Hanalei suits travellers who value a walkable small-town setting and mountain-backed beaches, while Princeville offers more resort and condominium options above the coast; both are wetter and farther from western sights. Kapaa and Wailua make practical East Side bases for exploring in both directions, though traffic can slow short journeys. For a week or more, splitting time between north and south saves backtracking: no road circles through the Na Pali Coast.
Best Time to Go
April–May and September–October often balance lighter crowds and pleasant weather; summer generally brings calmer North Shore seas, while winter brings bigger surf and more rain.
